Prof. Mugenda's Profile
Prof. Olive Mugenda is a distinguished academic leader and an accomplished facilitator in leadership,management, and governance programs across Africa and beyond.
She holds an MSc and PhD in Family and Consumer Sciences from Iowa State University, USA, and an MBA from the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI), Tanzania.
She is widely celebrated for her transformative tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University (2006–2016), where she made history as the first woman to lead a public university in Kenya and East Africa. Under her visionary leadership, the university rose to prominence as one of the region’s leading institutions. Prof. Mugenda also served as the Founding Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) - a top-tier health facility in East Africa (2019 – 2024).
Internationally, Prof. Mugenda has held numerous prominent positions; Chairperson of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) based in London (2013–2017), Vice-President of the International Association of Universities (IAU) in Paris (2009–2012), and Board Executive Member of the Association of African Universities (AAU) headquartered in Accra Ghana (2008–2014).
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to higher education, innovation, and institutional development,the Government of Kenya has also recognized her exemplary service and leadership in education, health, and the private sector with national honors, including the Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH).
