The Centre for Innovative Leadership & Governance CLIG is delighted to partner with the University of Manchester and other Kenyan institutions to train and mentor women in leadership.
For the last 8 years, CLIG has spearheaded training of University Leaders from Kenya and Africa and this has had great outcomes and transformation in their insitutions. This opportunity for Women Leaders will be the beginning of more robust mentorship efforts to support women willing to sharpen their leadership skills and transform their institutons.

Senior Women’s Leadership Development Programme (GEP2024–013) – Call for  Applications


Opportunity alert!

Consortium for the Kenya-UK Partnership led by the University of Manchester, UK in collaboration with KUTRRH, CLIG, JKUAT and KCA University is delighted to announce a training opportunity for women in senior management. The consortium was awarded a grant GEP2024–013 by the British Council on –Transforming Senior Leadership Practices and Culture to Advance Intersectional Gender Equality in Institutions of Higher Education and Research). The main aim of this grant is to promote gender equality and support women’s leadership and inclusive leadership capacity building by providing solutions to mitigate challenges related to leadership stereotypes, resources challenges, limiting organizational structures, infrastructure and declining quality of patient care.

Rationale: Achieving Gender Equality in Higher Education is an essential catalyst for positive change for women’s rights and social justice. Despite institutional, sector and (inter)national policy and framework commitment the under-representation women in senior leadership/executive roles persists and must urgently be addressed.

Programme Approach: Co-created between Kenya and Manchester partners, providing safe spaces enabling experienced women leaders to share experiences.

  • Key themes include global leadership perspectives; power, influence and voice; board level leadership and governance; reflexive, strategic leadership.
  • Opportunities to reflect on leadership styles, legacy and impact, cross cultural challenges, enablers and barriers relating to policy, leadership practices and culture.
  • Exploring intersectional gender stereotypes in leadership and the impact of gendered spaces (areas, activity and opportunities that may disadvantage women)
  • Underpinned by peer action learning/coaching and networking with executive level leaders and wider women’s networks.

Programme Structure and Dates:

Four (3hr) online/hybrid workshops, 10am – 1pm (GMT), 21st Mar, 24th Apr, 16th May, 25th Sept 2025

2 Day Leadership Retreat, Manchester UK, 9.30am – 3.30pm (GMT) 24th and 25th June 2025

Opportunity to attend the Women in Higher Education Network (WHEN) (inter)national conference, Manchester, 26th June 2026.  

Eligibility requirements:

  • Be a woman and member of a participating institution (University of Manchester, KUTRRH, CLIG, JKUAT, KCA-U)
  • Hold a senior management position at the institution (Head of Department; Dean; Directors; DVCs or equivalent )
  • Applicants submitting through CLIG: those from Universities, hold or have previously held leadership position, have attended the CLIG Leadership training in the past or whose institution has been part of CLIG training, and those who have been mentored in leadership under CLIG.
  • NB: Those working in KUTRRH – Hold a senior management position (Grade K1- K3). KUTRRH (Grade K1- K3)
  • Commitment to attend the training sessions in full 12 (twelve) hours of online training and 1 week training in Manchester in June 2025 as indicated in the Programme structure.
  • At least a year in senior management position.
  • Have a valid passport (and no known reason not to travel to the UK).

    • Current career stage and leadership experience (fit for programme).
    • Career aims, evidence and scope for executive level leadership.
    • what practical benefit might emerge to you and your institution as a result of this opportunity.
  1. One letter of recommendation, from a line supervisor indicating that the institution will facilitate the time needed for the training.


Selection timeline
Applicants will be notified of the status of their application (non-select or semi-finalist) in the first week of March 2025.
